Sir William Brown

Dear Sir, i have two questions:
1)I noticed on the internet that there was an article about Sir William Brown by Mary Hall in the 2006 edition of your journal. I am very interested in finding out about him as he may be a relative on my husband's mother's side. Could you possibly let me have a photocopy of this article. I will of course refund you the cost.

2) I am secretary of the Basque Children of '37 Association UK, and am trying to find out as much as I can about the colonies or homes that the children stayed in from 1937-1939. I know that they stayed at Greenbank, Upton Village, Birkenhead, and that in Liverpool they were in Nazareth House and a Catholic Girls' Orphanage. I wonder if anyone in your society has ever done any research on these homes and the whole story of the Basque children who came to Liverpool. Do you have any information or suggestions about where I couls find out specifically about the Liverpooll area. (Our web site is www.basquechildren.org if you would like to look it up. ) I myself often give talks to history societies about the Basque children, but I have nothing about Liverpool. I would be most grateful for any assistance on this fascinating subject.
Thank you for your help on both fronts

Yours
Natalia Benjamin

David Lewis Club

Corner of Upper Parliament Street and Great George Street

David Lewis - Founder of Lewis's Liverpool

Hi

I was born in Park Place Toxteth and christened in St James Church. I moved away in 1986 and am writing up some historical recollections of my youth between 1977 and 1981. I am trying to recall the large building that sat on the Corner of Upper Parliament Street and Great George Street. It had multiple uses, as a child I had to go to a clinic there and before it was demolished it was a men’s hostel. I think it was named after a person but for the life of me I can’t remember what it was called.

Do you have any ideas?

Thanks

Ian

Silver Presentation Lifeboat

I have recently acquired a beautiful silver presentation lifeboat. Presented to Mrs Samuel Plimsoll from funds raised by the Plimsoll Life-boat Fund Committees at Liverpool and Derby (Samuel Plimsoll, of Plimsoll Line fame, was MP for Derby). The Liverpool portion of the fund was contributed through the exertions of 'some working men in that town who wished to tender to Mr Plimsoll a token of their respect, as a small acknowledgement of his great efforts to protect the lives of our sailors......'

The residue of the fund was used to make the silver presentation piece. It was made by 'T.H. Paris, successors to J. Mayer , silversmith Liverpool'. Hidden from view inside the base is the inscription 'The joint work of Hy Glennon and Jos Lennie July 1876'. It has the Chester Hallmark for 1875/76.

The presentation of this silver lifeboat is well reported in the Liverpool Daily Post and I eagerly await a photocopy from the Central Library.

I have not been able to find a reference to T.H. Paris in the books on silver that I own - hence this e-mail. I would have thought this bit of Liverpool History would be of interest to the Liverpool History Society - if not already well known. I wonder if you can help. Any information regarding the Silversmith and of Glennon and Lennie would be much appreciated.
I would be happy to provide the Society with a fuller account of this event if of interest.
